Our Sustainable Processing Techniques For Green Coffee

Discover our sustainable processing techniques for green coffee at El Catuai. We are dedicated to implementing innovative and eco-friendly practices that minimize environmental impact while ensuring the highest quality standards. From seed to cup, we prioritize soil fertility management, efficient water usage, natural pest control, and responsible waste management. Join us on this journey as we showcase our commitment to sustainable coffee processing.

ELEVATING COFFEE QUALITY THROUGH SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

Every year, representative soil samples are taken from different coffee plantings for chemical analysis. This process aims to determine the appropriate fertilization dosage based on the soil's nutritional status and provide research data for soil calibration. Through this process, we estimate parameter values and test hypotheses to assess nutrient sufficiency or deficiency, as well as identify potential adverse conditions. Over time, this tool serves as a valuable soil fertility record, allowing us to establish formulas and organic fertilization dosages based on chemically analyzed results.

Soil Fertility Management

Microbiological and Physicochemical Analysis of Wet Processing Water

Once a year, various samples of the water originating from different points until it reaches the wet processing area are taken. These water samples undergo laboratory analysis to determine their physicochemical and microbiological characteristics, ensuring their suitability for human consumption, industrial processes, discharge, and production. These chemical analyses are essential for maintaining our OCIA organic certification requirements.

Our entire farm is irrigated through open channels that flow from mountain springs, and these channels cross the entire Catuai area. Additionally, the Catuai plantations are situated along the banks of the La Concha River, which irrigates the majority of the plantation's borders, spanning over three kilometers.

Weed Suppression

Twice a year, we employ mechanical mowers to effectively control weed growth within our coffee plantation, ensuring that weeds do not compete for essential nutrients in the soil.

Additionally, we utilize a proprietary organic formula, currently undergoing patenting, which is strategically applied in the surrounding areas and new plantations to prevent weed growth. This completely organic formula, developed by our administrator Darwin Monterroso, is in the process of being patented by the Ministry of Agriculture. Our comprehensive approach ensures effective weed suppression while maintaining the integrity of our organic practices.

Boosting Soil Fertility With Organic Matter

At El Catuai, our coffee plantation is nestled within expansive forests with a rich diversity of trees that continuously contribute organic matter to the soil. Our practice of weed trimming twice a year (at the beginning and end of winter) not only controls weed growth but also enriches the soil with organic matter. Additionally, we selectively prune shade trees in the coffee plantations each year to regulate shade levels. This pruning process provides a significant amount of organic branches that are carefully distributed around the coffee plants to create organic compost. Furthermore, our farm is situated on volcanic soil in close proximity to the active Pacaya volcano, which constantly erupts and enriches the soil with its ash, resulting in highly fertile black soil. This exceptional soil quality directly impacts the flavor and quality of our coffee beans.

Unveiling the Path To The Highest Quality Green Coffee

Mitigation Zones: Protecting Organic Coffee Production

In order to prevent contamination of organic coffee plantations by nearby residential houses and non-organic plantations, we establish 50-meter buffer zones for mitigation purposes. If a coffee plantation is located within this zone, the harvest must be separated and sold separately from the organic export batch.

The minimum incubation period of three to five years is required in case the non-organic plantation or contaminating residential house is removed, ensuring that the affected fruit can be reintegrated into the regular organic production of the farm.

Sustainable Water Treatment & Processing

At our farm, La Concha, we prioritise sustainable practices in water treatment and processing to ensure the highest quality coffee beans. Before the inclusion of honey waters into the existing oxidation ponds on our farm, they undergo careful treatment by a certified Sanitary Engineer. This process guarantees proper handling and prevents any contamination of the underlying aquifer.

Subsequently, the honey waters are treated with Terra Biosa, an organic biodegradable product composed of microorganisms that efficiently consume the residual honey. Terra Biosa is also certified organic, further affirming our commitment to environmental stewardship. Through these meticulous and eco-friendly techniques, we not only protect our precious water resources but also deliver exceptional coffee with a clear conscience.

Fostering Biodiversity & Promoting Agro-Forestry In Our Organic Coffee Plantations

At our organic coffee plantations, we prioritize the preservation of biodiversity and the implementation of sustainable practices. As part of our commitment to the environment, we have introduced Agro-Forestry initiatives that not only promote the growth of organic coffee but also foster diverse ecosystems. Through voluntary forest plantations and the replanting of cypress trees, we contribute to the conservation of native flora and fauna while ensuring the long-term viability of our farms.

Additionally, our tree nursery program allows us to introduce a variety of tree species, such as Copalchi, Cuje, and Neem, which not only provide shade and contribute to the overall health of the ecosystem but also serve as a valuable resource for organic insecticides. With our focus on biodiversity and sustainable practices, we are proud to offer exceptional organic coffee while nurturing the natural world around us.

At El Catuai, we are dedicated to implementing sustainable practices throughout our organic coffee plantations. From soil fertility management to water analysis and weed suppression, we strive to produce the highest quality coffee while preserving the environment.

Our commitment to biodiversity and agro-forestry ensures a harmonious coexistence with nature.
